Driver Controls
Sanding Panel
The panel containing the sanding controls is located on the Driver’s left hand side.
The buttons and functions are (from left to right)
- Sand Inhibit
- Sand (Apply Sand)
- No Sand
- Low Sand Indicator
- Battery Low Voltage
Wheel Slide Protection (WSP) & Sanding System
A modern wheel slide protection (WSP) system is fitted to the Class 484 trains:
- Automatic sanding during braking is provided in brake steps 2, 3 and Emergency when WSP is detected
- Automatic sanding in traction is provided; a 10 second blast of sand will be applied with no time delay between each application
- Automatic sanding can be stopped by pressing the ‘Sand inhibit’ button
- A sanding test button is provided on each sander control box
Wheel Slide Protection (WSP) & Sanding System (cont.)
A modern wheel slide protection system is fitted to the Class 484 trains:
- No Sand and Low Sand Indications are provided on the sand control modules on the outside of each vehicle
Note: Low sand inhibits the sanding system in powering but allows it in braking. The system will continue to apply sand until the tank is empty.
